For indie designers, the business of getting professional photos of your designs is now BIG BUSINESS. Having amazing model photos of your designs WILL sell them. I remember when my very first amazing photographer, Jennifer Anderson, approached me to photograph for ZozoBugBaby. The rest is history. Finding a fantastic children's photographer is SUCH a great move for any children's clothing business. I have been incredibly blessed to work with SO MANY that have become friends to me. :)

I very rarely approach photographers to shoot for ZozoBugBaby. I am SO humbled to have many photographers email me to shoot for me on a weekly basis. There are a few photographers out there that I secretly REALLY REALLY want to work with. I won't name names. :)

Since I don't approach photographers very often, I get INSANELY nervous when I do. The ONLY photographers I have sought out to shoot for me are Pascale Wowak (now..one of my best friends), Mika Beth Edwards (still REELING that she agreed to work with me!) and a few of my other faves. :) My hands were SWEATING when I FINALLY got the courage to email Tara Whitney. Tara is LEGEND. It took many months before I had the confidence to email her about shooting for Zozo. I emailed. I waited.

Tara was SO sweet to email me back the next day and explain that commercial work wasn't her passion and it wouldn't be an enjoyable project for her. I LOVED Tara for that and TOTALLY understood where she was coming from. You HAVE to do what you enjoy. What Tara DID do was refer me to her friend, Shannon Sewell, an amazing children's commercial photographer. Much to my surprise, Shannon and I lived only 45 minutes from each other! It MAY surprise you that at the time, I didn't really know a lot of photographers in my own area. ALL of the photographers that shoot for Zozo are out-of-state. Aside from that, photographers can be "iffy" about getting to know other local photogs (yep....I am a blossoming photog, too).

I contacted Shannon. We met for coffee. (Shannon shoots for big companies like Knuckleheads and Hula Mula. There is no way she is going to shoot for me, right?). I looked at her work and I think it took a week to pick my jaw up off the ground. Shannon's work was INSPIRED. GENIUS. She agreed to work with me the next time she had a workshop to style. Honestly....the rest is history.

PHOTOGS: If you have the chance to take a workshop from Shannon......I CANNOT stress enough that you should DO IT. I have been around Shannon several times now and she has done both personal and commercial shoots for me. I am in awe of her EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. Have you seen her in action on THE FRAMED SHOW????? HEAD THERE NOW.

What I find so enganging about Shannon is...

1. She is an incredible photographer. Have you SEEN her images????

2. She is SO creative, it puts me to shame. She makes ALL of her sets and includes her children in the craft activities.

3. Unlike most photographers that will NOT mentor other photogs within a 90 mile radius, Shannon will mentor the photographer next door. Shannon is just one of those pure souls that has a very Zen philosophy. She has no fear. She is the most open person I know. She is a MAGNET.

Her work. Her philosophy. Her STYLE. If you photograph children and are shopping for mentorship opportunities, I CANNOT STRESS ENOUGH how amazing Shannon is. You will learn SO MUCH and have SUCH a fun time. :)

SMALL NATION Photo Contest!

This is going to be a FUN contest! As many of you know, May 1st is the debut of the new clothing line, Small Nation. Small Nation was developed by the designers of The Measure, The Trendy Tot, Lillipops Designs and of course, ZozoBugBaby! We are all friends and have very unique looks to our children's clothing, but thought we could seriously rock out a combined clothing line.

I can't WAIT to show you all! Anyway, professional photographers will have the opportunity to win ONE look from the new collection to shoot for us and be featured on not only the Small Nation website and Facebook page, but all 4 separate designers' pages, as well! Talk about exposure!

> 1. Tell me why you do what you do. What is your specialty and why?
I am a photographer and love love what I do. I do it because it makes me happy. Not many people love their jobs in these days but I can say I love my job! I absolutely love photographing the high school seniors. They have got to be my favorite of all. A specialty? hm. well I don't know if it's a specialty but I love using off camera flash in my photography. I bring out an Alien Bee and a vagabond with me on most of my shoots. I love the dramatic lighting I get with using my light.

> 2. You are at the top of your game. What is the ONE thing that got you there? The ONE piece of advice you can give to up-and-coming photographers?
Perserverance. My husband has been my number one supporter. He's pushed me to more levels of putting myself out there than I ever would have. I have a lot of business ideas that I come up with but with out him I would have never put them into play. I'm not the most confident girl in the world so he helps me in that area! He is an amazing husband! So, keep pushing yourself to keep getting better at what you do no matter if it's not your comfort level. Just do it.

> 4. Any mishaps or disasters on any of your shoots? Funny stories?
I can think of a couple but this one was when I was teaching a workshop in Salt Lake City. We were nearing the end of the day and shooting. We were at an old abandoned house it was just absolutely gorgeous! I was shooting one of my favorite models too! Well, I was all into shooting and I took one step and OUCH! My shoe and foot went thru barbed wire! It wasn't just a prickly thing it was about as thick as a double a battery. Oh my goodness it hurt! That was day 1 of the workshop! I had one more day left! You should have seen me hobbling all around Park City the next day!

> 5. What do you do to avoid/cure burnout? How do you stay inspired?
Towards the end of my senior season it's hard to not feel burnt out but you have to keep getting to know your clients and find out who they are. if you don't get to know them and you just treat them like just another person that walks through your door and don't care about who they are you will burn out. I love hearing about my customer's lives. I get involved with them. One time I had a senior who's friend had some unfortunate circumstances that her parent's divorced and moved to separate states. The senior was staying here to finish her year and she was living in an apartment but didn't have a lot of things to cook with. She mentioned that she didn't have a microwave. Well, we had a little one just sitting in our garage and I gave it to her. My business, is not just a business. I am a great listener and friend to my customers. I stay inspired by my customers and their stories. They inspire me.

> 6. What do you do to push yourself to grow? How do you shoot "outside the box"?
I am constantly thinking of new ways to grow my business and to be even better. I don't tend to look at a ton of other photographers work because sometimes I look at some amazing work and think that I stink at what I do. So, I just shoot for myself and I do what feels right. I adore what I do for a living.

> 7. Favorite snack food to shove inside your camera bag for long shoots?
I don't bring any snacks with me while I'm shooting but I do bring a bag of goodies for my seniors. I actually should put some snacks in there though!

Red!

Brussle Sprouts! My mom and dad used to make those and they made us eat them! Oh they are disgusting!

> 10. Favorite city/country to shoot?
My favorite state to shoot in has to be Utah all the way. Some of my most favorite photographs I've taken have been from there.

> 12. Name ONE photographer that you look up to and why.
One in particular really caught my eye two years ago and that is what got me started in learning off camera flash. It was this photo http://www.flickr.com/photos/rubio/3381383167/ by James Rubio. I saw that photo and had to know how he did it. At that time, I really had no idea! I called up a friend and asked him. He said he was using a speedlite! I have to say I was clueless to a speedlite. Then he said it was a flash! Oh my gosh, I felt dumb! I had one of those in my bag! And the rest is history!

A few weeks ago I got to meet James and his wife Beverly. I was in Hawaii and I knew I just had to meet him. We went to Ken's Pancake House in Hilo. LOL My husband and I had some 'local' food..... That was a trip! lol Anyway, it was so great to meet him and just tell him I loved his work.
If I could do my wedding all over again I would hire James. My husband and I didn't even really know about Photographers when we got married. We bought a whopping 3.2 megapixel camera for $1,000 and then had my husband's friend take our photos. That is something I do regret!

I am not a wedding photographer and don't see that for myself but I really adore James' work. I'd fly out there again for our 10 year anniversary and have him photograph us if he'd do it! That would mean a lot!

> 13. Most all creative people I know are extremely talented in more than one artform. Are you skilled in anything else? Music? Art?

When I was in college, I spent a semester in Sevilla, Spain. It was an amazing experience! I would go back there in a heartbeat. Oh how I loved it there!

Photographer INSIGHT: Pascale Wowak

Today's photographer INSIGHT is Pascale Wowak of Pascale Wowak PHotography! You have seen her work LOTS at ZozoBugBaby! I have even had the pleasure to mentor with Pascale (and hope to do so again soon!). I love how crisp and FUN Pascale's photos are and her daughter is just THE perfect Zozo model! That child has SPUNK! Be sure to check out Pascale's FACEBOOK Fan page to see all of her latest photo shoots!

Pascale is in Santa Cruz, CA and I know her schedule is almost full already for 2011, but if you are in the area check her out! She photographed my girls and it's just PRICELESS to me!

1. Tell me why you do what you do. What is your specialty and why?

My story is a pretty common one, actually. I fell back in love with photography after the birth of my first child. I should say, I fell back into ARTISTIC photography. When I was a police officer, I did specialized Crime Scene Photography as part of my duties, but that was *kinda* different.... Basically, I LOVE the storytelling aspect of photography. Back in the day, I used to write quite a bit but after kids my life got too busy and my journal started to collect dust. My means of "telling the story" shifted to photography instead. It just feels so REAL and so RAW. I love that I am leaving all these images out there for my clients of their journey through life. Little snippets of their family history, their story. It's something generations down the road will be able to look back on and cherish. It gives me tremendous satisfaction to give this gift to my clients. The other great thing about it is that because I am so personally invested in my clients and so deeply attached to their stories, I can't help but infuse a little piece of me in every picture I take for them. It's part of that whole symbiotic relationship between Photographer and Subject, that intimacy, which helps create such touching and meaningful images. The pictures I take are not only a representation of who they are, but also with a touch of how I see them, the beautiful connections I bear witness to and get to document for them. It's pretty darn cool when you think about it. :)
I'm not exactly sure I have a specific niche although people do tell me that my Maternity imagery is very different from what they are used to seeing out there. The majority of my bookings are for Portraiture (Child, Family, Headshots etc...) but I also do a variety of Commercial Work, Artistic Collaborations, and charity work as well.

2. You are at the top of your game. What is the ONE thing that got you there? The ONE piece of advice you can give to up-and-coming photographers?

That's a really good question. I think it's actually a combination of things. After all, "success" is measured in so many different ways.... The only time I did any "paid" marketing was the very first 6 months of me launching my business over 6 yrs ago. Since that time, I have not paid for a single Advertisement. Every booking from there on out has been through word of mouth. I'm now at the point where I practically book up a year in advance. It is an incredible blessing. I've also gotten to the point where I am able to finally take on a little less work and lead a more balanced life. Admittedly, the first few years I was working a more than full time schedule and making very little money. To some degree, I think that's part of establishing your business and growing your client base, but I definitely was not very business savvy. I think anyone launching a business should take the time to read up on the Boring Business Stuff which is undoubtedly critical information to know and understand. (Sorry for the shameless plug here but my E Book is a GREAT place to start!). I pretty much learned everything the hard way when it came to the business side of things. I wasted far too much time focusing on being "an artiste" and essentially working for free. Not smart. So, being business savvy is essential to being able to successfully grow and sustain your business. This helps you focus on the business aspect rather than trying to "learn on the job." I feel strongly that in this over saturated market, it's really important to come into the game with some degree of experience and knowledge beforehand. This may mean not launching your business until you have the technical skills required of the job. There's far too much competition out there to call yourself a pro after taking an online photography class and buying an expensive camera. The other aspect is "smart" marketing, which is exactly the opposite of paying for ad space. I highly recommend the book UnMarketing by Scott Stratten. While reading this book, I learned that everything I was already (unknowingly) doing was totally in line with everything this particular approach advocates. Having a vibrant, interesting and frequently updated blog is huge. Being active on Facebook is really important. Being truly devoted and invested in your clients is hands down the most important factor of all. Here are two quotes from his book that really help explain my approach to running my business.
"If you are your authentic self, then you have no competition"
"If you believe business is built on relationships, make building them your business"
And finally, with regard to being at the top of your game, the best piece of advice I can give is to EXPERIMENT and PRACTICE. You HAVE to push yourself. You have to stay out of that comfort zone. If you ever get to the place where you are feeling like it's "easy" or "I could do that in my sleep" then you are heading for a nasty rut. Never start getting complacent with your work.

3. Favorite lens? Are you Nikon or Canon?

I don't have a favorite lens. My favorite lens is whatever lens I am using at that moment because it is enabling me to create the images I am capturing. Having said that, I do LOVE my 35mm f1.4L. It's quite yummy.
I'm a Canon owner but that's really only because I got my first Canon 35mm film camera 20+ years ago and have stayed with Canon ever since, slowly building an arsenal of equipment and lenses over the past several years. I've played with the new Nikon's recently and quite honestly, they are incredible. Ultimately, it's really not about the camera but rather the PERSON using the equipment at hand. :)

4. Any mishaps or disasters on any of your shoots? Funny stories?

Goodness, let me think.... No disasters that I can remember off the top of my head and that's either because I haven't had anything *that* disastrous happen or because I'm suffering from PTSD and have locked it away in a deep, dark corner of my brain! Seriously though, I've been really lucky. I also happen to go through a checklist of preparatory steps before every shoot. I did learn, first hand, the age old adage of "never turn your back on the ocean" when a rogue MASSIVE wave took me out while photographing a family once.... In all fairness, it took EVERYONE on the beach out. We all agreed it was quite Tsunami-ish....

Addendum: My friend reminded me of a shoot where I was meeting my clients in the parking lot and greeting the mom. The 5 yr old came up from behind me, all stealth like, and unsnapped the safety on my camera strap, resulting in my camera and lens ($4k of equipment) going crashing several feet straight down onto the hard pavement below. I had not even had a chance to take a SINGLE shot yet. The camera, miraculously, seemed to be working (I did a few test shots). We did the shoot and prayed for the best. Turns out every 3rd image or so was fuzzy due to mechanical issues in the lens from the crash. I still managed to get enough stellar images to give something substantial to my clients. This was during my peak season where I was having shoots every other day. I had to send the camera and lens back to Canon (for amazing fast service thankfully!) and use all my back up equipment for the rest of that week. My camera still has a huge dent in it from that. My client said she thought she literally saw my heart stop beating at the sound of the camera cracking against the cement. Distinctly possible. Fortunately, it all worked out in the end despite the mishap! PHEW......

5. What do you do to avoid/cure burnout? How do you stay inspired?

This is where exploring, experimenting and trying new things is so critically important. Shake things up a bit. Find new locations. Try different angles. Force yourself to shoot during a time of day (not with a client but just personal work, say, with your kids) you would normally never photograph during. Also, doing charity work, such as NILMDTS (Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep) helps remind you of the power of a single photograph and how deeply precious the work that we do can be and what it can mean to a family. It helps re-align your sense of perspective.

6. What do you do to push yourself to grow? How do you shoot "outside the box"?

Definitely try different angles and perspectives. Try a fixed lens instead of a zoom lens. It forces you to move around and try new things.

7. Favorite snack food to shove inside your camera bag for long shoots?

Usually a small bag of almonds or a "health" bar for AFTER the shoot. I find that during the shoot I never get hungry, thirsty or need to pee. Yet, the second the shoot is over, I feel ALL those things, all at once! Ha!

8. Favorite color?

This makes me sound so pathetically indecisive but my mood pretty much determines my favorite color at any given moment. So, needless to say, it's always changing! I totally go through "color phases" too.

9. Any foods you hate?

Well, I'm a vegetarian so meat is not really a favorite.... :) Other than that, I love to eat and will try anything once. It should be noted that I work off a European approach to the "food groups"... My four basic food groups are: 1) Fresh bread 2) Dark Chocolate 3) Cheese and 4) Everything else

10. Favorite city/country to shoot?

Paris has always been a favorite. I am going back in April this year with my daughter (my first time back to my homeland in six years!). I'm incredibly excited to be able to go on photo-walks with her and soak in all the amazing architecture, people watching, textures and vibe of this magical city together.
A close second is Prague in the Czech Republic. *swoon*

11. Any books, poets, or quotes that inspire you?

Hmmmmmm. I used to be a voracious reader... but then I had kids. And launched a full time business. And got a rambunctious puppy. So, needless to say, my reading has essentially been relegated to catching up on what is going on in the world by skimming through my Newsweek and watching the Daily Show..... Sigh.... There is a quote by Eleanor Roosevelt which I have posted on my desk as a daily reminder of my personal "goal" for 2011. "Yesterday is history, Tomorrow is a mystery, Today is a gift." It re-affirms my desire to focus more on the NOW. To worry less about what the future holds and to let go of the bad stuff of the past. There are so many inspirational books, poets and quotes out there. I can't wait to hear what the other photographers share!

12. Name ONE photographer that you look up to and why.

Picking just one amongst the hundreds of unbelievable artists out there is certainly a bit challenging. I would probably go with James Nachtwey (http://www.jamesnachtwey.com). He has left (and continues to leave) an indelible legacy of imagery which enlightens the world on our collective history. He brings to light the good, the bad and the ugly in a real, raw and respectful way. His "eye" just blows me away and his commitment to the truth is unparalleled. I am completely in awe when I look at his work. The rawness and depth of his images simply takes my breath away. He takes the concept of "story telling" to a whole new level. His impact on documenting history will BE a part of history itself. He is, without doubt, one of "The Greats."

13. Most all creative people I know are extremely talented in more than one artform. Are you skilled in anything else? Music? Art?

Pathetically, I can't draw a stick figurine to save my life. I've never played a musical instrument (as much as I would LOVE to learn one!) and I can't carry a tune (despite my persistence in singing at the top of my lungs, much to my family's dismay). I think my only other creative realm would be dancing. I love to dance. I love music. The two go hand in hand quite nicely. :)

14. Tell us one completely random, unknown thing about you. Dig deep. :)

Geesh, I'm such an open book, I am not sure there is anything "unknown" about me! Ha! :)
Let's see.... I played the part of The Little Prince in my French School play as a child (having memorized the ENTIRE book, including all the other parts) and always secretly wondered what my life would be like now had I gone into Drama/Acting.

1. Tell me why you do what you do. What is your specialty and why?
I love it and knowing that my clients love it too is the cherry on top :) (How corny was that?) I decided late last year to turn my focus to what I truly loved shooting. So I now I can say I specialize in engagements, weddings, boudoir and maternity. These are the sessions that make me the most happy. I want to shoot what I love or there is no point to it in my opinion.

2. You are at the top of your game. What is the ONE thing that got you there? The ONE piece of advice you can give to up-and-coming photographers?
You must have me confused with another photographer :) I am constantly thinking about what I can do to improve and grow my business. My love for what I do is what drives me. My advice to other photographers... stay true to yourself. Shoot what you love and leave the rest to someone else.

3. Favorite lens? Are you Nikon or Canon?
I am a Nikon girl :) My favorite lens is my 85mm 1.8.

4. Any mishaps or disasters on any of your shoots? Funny stories?
No real mishaps but one of my maternity clients got pulled over right by our shoot location. She got off with a warning :)

5. What do you do to avoid/cure burnout? How do you stay inspired?
I don't shoot more then one session in a day. I shoot once a week and will only shoot 2 weddings in a month. I don't want to be over worked and I don't want to miss out on precious time with my little ones. I look through fashion magazines for inspiration. The posing and the clothing DIVINE!

6. What do you do to push yourself to grow? How do you shoot "outside the box"?
I really wanted to push myself to think 'outside the box' this year so when I was asked to take part in a 52 week photo project with 19 amazing photographers I jumped on board. Creative challenges are fun and they are... challenging ;)

7. Favorite snack food to shove inside your camera bag for long shoots?
There is no room in my camera bag for snacks lol however I do try to grab a Dr.Pepper from McDonalds on the way to a shoot.

8. Favorite color? Pink

9. Any foods you hate? Not a fan of many cooked vegetables.

10. Favorite city/country to shoot? Las Vegas :)

11. Any books, poets, or quotes that inspire you?
Those that mind don't matter and those that matter don't mind. However I did just come across a quote Don't Complete.... Be Remarkable.

12. Name ONE photographer that you look up to and why.
There are so many for so many different reasons however most recently Angie Warren. She has made life changing decisions this pass year and all that were from her heart.

BLOOPER Photo CONTEST!

This idea was born out of my own frustration with shooting my 2 girls. While Delia is usually game for a shoot (provided candy lies at the end of the photography rainbow), Zoe just is OVER IT. I have SUCH a passion for photography and always have. I remember submitting a really cool photo of chickens in my portfolio from high school to get into the Art program in college. It frustrates me to NO END that I cannot bring my visions to life with my own daughters!

I usually have to use other people's kids for my own shoots. So sad, but true. Luckily..my favorite model, Ziba, LOOOOOOVES to model for me! :)
Anyway.....after another failed shoot, I decided that "real" photographers must have hundreds of blooper shots, too. I want to SEE THEM! :)

I haven't laughed this hard in AGES. This is the BEST CONTEST! Here are the rules:

1. The submission deadline will be this MONDAY, JANUARY 3rd at 6 am PACIFIC TIME. THat will give the international folks just as long to enter.

2. ONE ENTRY PER PERSON. EMAIL TO zozobugbaby@gmail.com

2010 in REVIEW

I have spent the day with my family on a MUCH needed break today. We baked in Zoe's Easy Bake oven. We played about one million rounds of "Hungry Hungry Hippo". We colored. I had NO idea how DEPRIVED of my family I was. I have been on SURVIVAL mode for about a year.

This has been the most difficult year of my life. It MAY not come as a shock that I am NOT a good business person. My brain leans 99.9% to the CREATIVE quadrant (whatever that is). I have the BEST intentions and take on WAY more than I should. This year has seen that MULTIPLIED. I am SO completely honored that you all love my work as much as you do. Over the last 2 weeks I have transitioned my business from custom-order to ready-made only. It has been a HUGE stress relief! While that will limit designs a lot more, it makes for much happier customers and a MUCH less stressed out ME!

Having this new business model will allow me to have a REALLY fast turnaround time with trunk show orders. I have become great friends with Tristian of Gracylu Originals and I am so honored that she has chosen to team up with ZozoBugBaby for the 2011 trunk shows. We are completely booked until Fall of 2011!

I am so humbled that many of you have stuck with me through this tough year and continued to believe in me. I do have BIG things in the works for Zozo, but I cannot announce anything yet. I have alienated many this year and for that, I am so disappointed in myself. I am nothing if not a PERFECTIONIST. Putting a reign on my business growth has DEFINITELY been a struggle. I have let my business grow to a point that even with 4 employees, it's hard to manage. I am a lucky girl. THANK YOU For your support. To those that I have disappointed.....I am TORN UP about it and I am sorry.

To my friends.....words cannot express. There are some of you that see my life in person and give such amazing support. I have met THE MOST amazing women through zozo. I treasure ALL OF YOU.

My best friend, Lynsey, is my rock. HANDS DOWN. I don't even need to say anymore. She knows.

2011 PHOTOGRAPHER PACKAGES

I FINALLY see the light at the end of the tunnel with orders and I actually see a calm and relaxed Christmas in my family's future! :) I feel like I can catch up now in some informational posts for 2011, so let's get down to business!

While I have always offered photographer "packages" with my clothing (as sort of an off-menu item), I'm going to officially announce the option now for 2011. I am so humbled that such a huge group of photographers enjoy clothing their clients in my designs for photo shoots! Now you can order a "package" of sample designs to use one of two ways.

1. You can order a minimum of 5 designs at a discount to keep in your studio as ORDER SAMPLES. You can use the samples to shoot on your little clients or take orders for other sizes.

2. You can order a minimum of 10 designs at a further discount to use as ORDER/STUDIO samples for your clients.

You, as the photographer, can earn a commission for all orders taken. I will also promote you on my FAcebook page with photos of your clients in my designs.

ALSO...in 2011, I am finishing up a huge project I have been working on for quite some time. I have been compiling a list of photographers I have worked with over the years and organizing the list by geographical region. I am THRILLED that so many of my customers have found amazing photographers in their own areas through their work with ZozoBugBaby. I want that to continue! The list will be a FREE resource for anyone interested. I work with photographers all over the world (and have customers all over the world). I want to introduce you to each other and help my customers capture life moments with some of you AMAZING photogs!

Anyway...orders have already started for photographer samples and due to the sheer volume of my business, spots will be limited going forward. State of Zozo address.............

Hi friends!
It's that time again. Around Thanksgiving I always do a "State of Zozo" address, so here we go. :)

First....I remember being in this EXACT same place last year. Stressed out and overworked and very little help. THIS YEAR? I"m also stressed out, overworked and have 4 assistants!!!! WOW! That just means I have GROWN SIGNIFICANTLY this year. Every year I try and compensate for growth, but the growth always seems to beat me.

This year, again...growth has overtaken me. I have disappointed many a customer. I have taken on WAY more than I can handle. It's a problem I have. Sometimes I Just want to make everyone happy....to the detriment of my own family. This can no longer happen.

I didn't launch Zozo to become a bad Mom, but that's the direction I am headed. Zozo has CONSUMED me over the last year. I am SO BLESSED that the demand for my clothing line far exceeds the supply, but that is a double edged sword. My girls are my life and I cannot keep putting business before the well-being of my gorgeous babies. This is a lesson I have learned the HARD WAY.

I love to make people happy, but don't confuse that with being a "people pleaser". I KNOW how amazing it is when your children LOVE what they wear. I have VERY picky girls and when they LOVE what they wear....they SHINE. :) I want to bring that to the world. Unfortunately, in the process, I have neglected my Mom duties in favor of my designer obligations. That is no longer acceptable to me or my family.

In order to balance my life a bit more, I am making MUCH needed changes. I was recently VERY inspired by a Kelsey Anderson blog post. She came totally clean about her passions and newintentions for 2011. She stayed true to her passion and that really resonated with me. I will only do what I am passionate about.

1. I am very passionate about BOY CLOTHING. I want so much to develop my boy line to the level of my girl line.

2. I am also very passionate about BEDDING. I LOVE interior design and decorating and the requests for my bedding have been overwhelming. I LOVE THIS!!!!

3. While Zozo doll clothing is ADORABLE, it is just not feasible anymore. It takes WAY too much time and the profit margin is almost NIL.

So..I have thought long and hard about this. I am discontinuing all doll clothing in favor of my BOY LINE and BEDDING. Christina of BAMBOLETTA DOLLS does have exclusive use of several of my doll patterns, so doll clothing will still be available (just not through me).

Also..I have some AMAZING projects coming up with fellow designers, as well as photographers. I want to focus on those in 2011. You will see some INCREDIBLE collaborations with GRACYLU ORIGINALS, THE MEASURE, THE TRENDY TOT, and LILLIPOPS DESIGNS, as well as breathtaking photographer collaborations.
THIS is what I want to focus on. While many of you have experienced frustration with me.....others have shown grace and understanding.

I am in an AMAZING place as a designer. The demand FAR FAR exceeds the supply for my product. Those of you that are diehard Zozo fans know that I am an original. I don't copy. I am TRUE and you value that. I appreciate you beyond measure.

I am moving to ONLY READY MADE in my Big Cartel shop in 2011 and will ONLY take orders for the TRUNK SHOWS. I apologize to those of you I have disappointed with my turnaround times. I am SO sorry. I appreciate those of you that have been so sweet to me..beyond measure. :) 2011 will see changes for Zozo, but I think you all will be SO much more pleased. My designs will be TRUE and HONEST. They will be RARE. They will be UNIQUE.

I love you all and I have made SUCH amazing friends through Zozo. :) A separate blog post is in the works for you. :) Don't worry. :) I never thought my vision would grow to what it has. It's AMAzING to me that you all love what I do. I love you. I really do. Stay tuned for more fun stuff and thank you for an amazing 2010.

After 9 months...the Zozo trunk shows are BACK and better than ever. :) Beginning in February 2011, ZozoBugBaby is teaming up with Gracylu Originals to bring you a very exclusive, very amazing trunk show season!

BETTER YET? The trunk shows will offer both BOY and GIRL clothing!!!!

The designs will be exclusive to the trunk shows and not available on our websites. Can't host a trunk show or attend one? No worries! There will be one or two online trunk shows available, as well.

I am thrilled that Gracylu Originals will be offering more "everyday wearable" pieces to coordinate with the ZozoBugBaby clothing!

When I had the idea to hold a photography contest, I TRULY thought I'd get under 50 entries. I had over 200 entries. I am still in shock! The entries were just fantastic and I really had to change the judging process a bit to handle the volume!

I am so humbled by the response! If I could have 50 winners, I SO would (but I'd go broke!). It was a REALLY tough competition and wasn't easy for the judges. In fact......the top two entries were SO close for the winning prize.

I speak often of my love and passion for photography, but my in-depth education really began in college ( I was a Fine Art major). I learned with film and a darkroom and I still REALLY MISS film photography! The darkroom is SUCH a magical place! Anyway, learning digital photography and post-processing in Photoshop was definitely a new journey for me. I started out using Photoshop Elements, but now use CS4. I flew down to California last year to get some one-on-one Photoshop training with Pascale Wowak. I have also learned an incredible amount from all of the many classes and tutorials at MCP Actions.

The live screen-sharing format of the group and one-on-one classes is the absolute best way to learn! I am not content to just push a button and have the action do the work. I really enjoy learning everything I can about manual processing and the elements BEHIND the actions. I have learned all of that through Jodi.

The absolute MOST important aspect of good photography is making sure your image is as close to perfect as you can get it IN CAMERA. Not even Photoshop can "save" a bad photo.

My FAVORITE weekly feature on the MCP ACTIONS BLOG is the "Friday Blueprint". You get to see from beginning to end how the guest photographers process an image. I have asked a few photographers to create blueprints to share this week! Up first is Kimberly Hardy Adams of ELITE PHOTOGRAPHY. Kim only uses manual edits and MCP Actions in her every day editing and she always produces clean, natural results!

I just move at warp speed...doing my thing every day. I try to keep my head down and just CREATE. This weekend..issues have come up. My DEAR FRIEND (LOVE YOU!) sent me this exerpt from the book "REWORK" tonight by by Jason Fried and David Heinemeier Hansson. I know this ignites a firestorm of comments when I address this issue, BUT this week in particular has seen MAJOR issues with MANY of my friends. Is it a full moon???? Because SO MANY of us have dealt with this within the last few days, I felt the need to share.

Don't Copy

Sometimes copying can be part of the learning process, like when you see an art student replicating a painting in a museum or a drummer playing along to John Bonham's solo on Led Zeppelin's 'Moby Dick." When you're a student, this sort of imitation can be a helpful tool on the path to discovering your own voice.

Unfortunately, copying in the business arena is usually more nefarious. Maybe it's because of the copy and paste world we live in these days. you can steal someones words, images or code instantly. And that means it's tempting to try to build a business by being a copycat.

That's a formula for failure, though. The problem with this sort of copying is it skips understanding - and understanding is how you grow. You have to understand why something works or why something is the way it is. When you copy and paste, you miss that. You just re purpose the last layer instead of understanding all the layers underneath.

So much of the work of an original creator puts into something is invisible. It's buried beneath the surface. The copycat doesn't really know why something looks the way it looks or feels the way it feels or reads the way it reads. The copy is a faux finish. It delivers no substance, no understanding and nothing to base future decisions on.

Plus, if you're a copycat, you can never keep up. You're always in a passive position. You never lead; you always follow. you give birth to something that's already behind the times - just a knockoff, an inferior version of the original . That's no way to live.

How do you know if you're coping someone? If someone else is doing the bulk of the work, you're coping. Be influenced, but don't steal.

WHAT A WEEK!

As usual, this week has been a whirlwind (just like ALL weeks at Zozo), but this one seemed particularly wild. I am currently down 2 assistants due to personal reasons, so I am officially at DEFCON-1 to get work done. MAYDAY! LOL. No worries. I'll kick myself into overdrive this weekend to get caught up.

Secondly, I was presented with a crazy opportunity. My friend (and monpreneur) Mindee of Boogie Wipes happens to know the producers of the ABC show Shark Tank. They asked her to scout out some local talent. Not one to pass up an opportunity, I threw my name in the hat. The application is off and it's in the hands of producers now. I am just beside myself that Mindee is calling the producers next week to follow up on my application.

I honestly feel this opportunity came to me for one reason. I needed someone to shake my tree. I am a HORRIBLE bookkeeper. I basically just throw receipts in a trashbag until tax time. Seriously. I'm a Virgo and I'm SUPPOSED to be crazy organized. Nope. I'm hopeless.

Applying to be on Shark Tank forced me to look at my business and it's finances and inner workings. I was DUMBFOUNDED. I knew my business had grown each year, but I truly had NO IDEA how much it had grown. All I knew was..I was exhausted and consumed by my work. I struggle daily to keep up. I stress. I cry, but I LOVE and ADORE what I do.

Here's the skinny. I'm an investor's DREAM. Each year my sales have tripled or quadrupled from the year before. My business is SO much bigger than me. NO WONDER I can't seem to whittle down my turnaround time. While this is a GREAT thing, the big fat numbers slapped me in the face. I MUST run my business differently.

I don't know if I will be accepted to Shark Tank (for those that don't know..Shark Tank is a show to pitch your business to investors, hoping for an investment offer). I really am very "Zen" about things like this. I do the work and if it's meant to be.....awesome. If not, well..it wasn't the right time. Things work out as they are supposed to. I'll keep you updated! In any case, I am making an appointment with a business consultant to help me with my framework. I am not a small business anymore and I need to make changes to keep my customers happy. If nothing else, this entire Shark Tank process was VERY needed to show me this. :) Thank you SO MUCH Mindee for your business advice and for encouraging me in this! :) Now readers....go buy some Boogie Wipes. Take it from me....the grape scent rocks. :)

Zozo....you got some 'SPLAINING to do!

It's lunchtime, so....I'm eating a yummy Kashi Mediterranean pizza and thought I'd whip out a short blog post.

I often am asked..."If your wait time is 4 weeks, how is it that you can release new designs? Shouldn't you be working on your order list?".

FIRSTLY.......the first day of school is like the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. LOL. Once my girls get back into school (Sept 27th!!!!!), I PROMISE you may wait time will go down. You can even bookmark this blog post and hold me to it.

SECONDLY.....a lot of the new designs or samples I release ARE on the order list. :) My longtime customers (love you!) often just send me money and say "Create something fabulous." HELLO???? Music to my EARS!!!!!

Sometimes the product of that creative freedom yields something so amazing that I just HAVE to shoot it and offer it in the shop. That's how a big portion of my new designs are made. (As was the case with yesterday's "ORANGE MUSHROOM CHINESE TAKE-OUT DRESS!". That was actually an order for a "mystery dress" that I occasionally list in the shop. It BEGGED to be made for the masses.

The other scenario is when I send a photog a sample to photograph for a seasonal line. It never fails....professional photographer photos come in WAVES. I won't get any for a few weeks and then..BAM! I get photos from 3 or 4 photographers in the same day! Then..it looks like a posting frenzy. Sometimes photogs hold onto the outfits for weeks before shooting them..due to weather, vacation, etc......

In short...the time between when a garment is made and when it shows up in the shop could even be a couple of MONTHS.

Sometimes the OOAK samples I list on Facebook are just that....samples of a new design I'm considering. My fabulous assistant, Katy, has a TON of my fabric in her studio. If she happens to run out of supplies for her order list for the day, she'll create one-of-a-kind outfits to fill the rest of her day (KATY ROCKS!).

So..that's sort of an insider's look at how OOAK and samples are made and offered up on Facebook!

The struggle of success

I'm having a very reflective kind of day. I thought a nice, down-to-earth, honest blog post was in order. You really wouldn't believe how many emails I get from fellow designers. They all ask the same question.....'HOW do you do it all and keep everything together?".

All of these emails are from very successful designers and photographers in their own right. I often want to ask THEM the same question! I find it SO amazing that home-based "Mommy" businesses are finding SO much success. It's FANTASTIC! Time and time again, though, I see how we all struggle. People on the outside think I have it SO together. OH MAN. If you KNEW me......you would KNOW what a stressed out, overworked MESS I really am. I have NO balance in my life and I struggle on a daily basis to be a good mom and keep my business in check.

I am SO incredibly thankful for the success of my little clothing line, as I know all designers are that find success (in however you define "success"). One area I think we could all use improvement on is this facade that a lot of us Moms put on. It's the facade that we are SUPERMOM and have everything together. Whether you are a stay-at-home-Mom or work outside (or inside) the home, we ALL struggle every day.

When women email me, I give them the BIG UGLY TRUTH......I am a DISASTER. Ask my friends what my house looks like on any given day. Ask my husband once or twice during the week when dinner consists of eggs and toast. Ask the grocery store lady that has to look at my bloodshot eyes every week, due to sleep deprivation. These women are SO RELIEVED when I tell them what a MESS I really am. It's like this big ol' secret that we live unbalanced, stressful lives these days. We all want to look perfect to the masses.

I drop the ball on orders sometimes......I mess up. My studio looks like the aftermath of World War III. But..I love what I do. I wouldn't live this crazy life if I didn't. I love chatting with my customers so much and exchanging war stories from the day. Thanks to all of you for that. It's so nice to know we are all NORMAL. :)

So....in closing....be nice to other Mommies. :) We all struggle.

So....again with THE PRESSURE!!!! Nichole Haverland of Haverland Photography in Salem took me up on my mini-session offer at Swan Island Dahlias this weekend. I had to be ON MY GAME! Her girls were ADORABLE, but Miss S wasn't so excited about the shoot. I expect she is just about as "over" being photographed as my girls are!

Nevertheless......I was able to sneak some smiles from her. :) Nichole...thank you SO much for giving me the opportunity to shoot you and your girls. Photographing for a photographer was a great chance to push myself! :) I hope you love them!

Fairy necklaces!

Ok..I just had to share what I think is the most ADORABLE birthday gift that I got for Zoe's 5th birthday this year. My friend, Kim, of GROW WITH ME GIFTS, and her daughter make the cutest little handmade fairy necklaces!!! Zoe LOVED hers! Not only is it a colorful necklace, but inside the clear ball was a sweet little sparkly fairy and her sidekick.....little lime green doggie! What makes this gift even more special is that another creative little girl made them. :) The first thing Zoe said when she opened it was, "I want to write a thank you card because I love this so much!". New photos and a NEW "From C to Z" design!

There is SO much goodness to share in this post! Courtney Chu and I created a new design for our collaboration line, From C to Z! I thought a shoot that included our own separate clothing lines, as well as our collaboration line would be really visually exciting....and it was! Always willing to to come explore with me....local photographer, Kimberly Adams of Elite Photography, brought along her gorgeous girls and we made a night of it!

Let's just say that we had to take turns shooting while the other played the role of "child wrangler"! It was a lot of fun and the girls were real troopers! Jadyn is wearing a COURTNEYCOURTNEY flutter *pom dress, while Jordyn is wearing a new ZozoBugBaby dress. Zoe got to model the new FROM C to Z skirt, which is full of ruffles and twirl! You will see more of this style soon at From C to Z! They go fast when they are listed, so keep your eyes peeled! I also was VERY HONORED to photograph MANY new hats from Lori Holli at Citefuzz!!!! I have so many more to photograph and even matching doll hats, as well! Thank you Lori!!

Fall/Winter Trunk shows

I wanted to write a quick note about the upcoming trunk show season. I know so many of you are wanting to host a Zozo trunk show. As some of the hostesses from last season can verify........there were some bumps in the road with my first trunk circuit. I really wasn't very sure if Zozo trunk shows would gather a lot of interest. BOY....was I wrong.

I NEVER anticipated just how successful they would be. As a result...I found myself in a world a trouble with WAY too many orders on my hands. Most of my customers experienced very long delays in orders, and I.....well.......let's just say I barely slept for about 5 months. So..I learned a lesson. :)

I changed the way trunks are done this Fall, in that I will have a lot more ready-made items from the Fall Collection, as well as, a lot of one-of-a-kind pieces. I also am limiting the shows to 2 per month. This doesn't leave a whole lot of room to schedule them. While I can't schedule EVERYONE For a trunk show, I will see how the Fall shows do with this new format. If I can't get you on the Fall schedule, I promise to get those of you that are interested on the Spring 2011 schedule. Now that I have 2 rockstar assistants, we have increased production! If I need to hire more to expand the trunk shows, I'll do that, too. :)

Inside a true collaboration!

So many exciting things are happening these days at ZOZO, and at the top of that list is my collaboration with Courtney Chu of COURTNEYCOURTNEY. I think everyone knows by know just how many CC's we own and how much my girls adore her designs (me, too!). Over the last couple of years, our relationship has evolved into one that really pushes both of us as designers.

We see each others' hits and misses and inspire each other with new finds. We throw ideas around, and those ideas generally snowball into new creations. Our designs couldn't be more different, which makes the collaborative process such an exciting one! I don't even really remember the exact moment that our line, FROM C TO Z, became a reality. We never set out to collaborate. We are always eagerly sharing our new designs that we just came up with in the early morning hours. Courtney and I both gravitate towards a lot of the same ideas in terms of art, color, and mixed media design. We experimented. It worked. :)

What I love most about our C to Z line is that the process is a TRUE collaboration and it goes like this:

One of us receives a package with the beginnings of a dress. It's a surprise and we never know what we're going to be getting. Speaking for myself, I always look forward to the color combinations that I get to start out with! On my end...sometimes I know EXACTLY what I'll do to finish the dress right away, while sometimes I have to wait for a fabric to jump out at me. There is pretty much always that "AHA!" moment.

Then....I do my thing....add a little Zozo...and POOF....the C to Z is born! Sometimes, Courtney will get a package with the start of a project and she'll add in her CC and it happens again! We don't suggest anything to each other. We do our own thing.

We don't send each other fabrics to use in the collaborations. There are no preset instructions. It's random. It's pure. THAT is what true collaboration is. You get the BEST from each of us....in one little dress! For a process like this to yield great results, you have to trust the other person to understand the overall vision of the line. You give up 50% of the control in a collaboration, but with a mutual respect for each other's artistry, that's not a sacrifice!

While we do have our own individual clothing lines to run, you will definitely see more amazing FROM C TO Z creations in the future!

Takin' care of business...PART TWO!

I have a few more changes to announce going into summer and then FALL! So.....

1. Unfortunately, I will no longer be offering CUSTOM work. By "custom", I mean...tweaking my current designs by adding "this"..or taking away "that"...or adding a ruffle "here" or doing "this" dress, but with "this" neckline, etc..... I am streamlining the sewing process over here and getting into a lot of custom work really slows things down. I have added Katy and Dana to the Zozo team and they are familiar with most of my designs now (and will be GETTING familiar with my new ones!). When significant changes are made to one of my designs, I generally have to take on that work myself and I no longer have the time available to do that. We work on a "production sewing" model over here, which means many of the same design are sewn at once. We don't sew one item from beginning to end generally. They all come together at the same stage of completion, if that makes sense.

THIS DOES NOT AFFECT SIZING CHANGES!!!!! I will ABSOLUTELY tweak my sizing to fit your little ones and that will never change. I will ALWAYS offer custom sizing.

If you see a design of mine, but want to switch out fabrics, that is ok, too. If I have the fabrics in stock, it will go much faster. If you want a Zozo design in different fabrics than what I stock normally, I will allow that, as long as the fabric isn't too hard to get. Some fabrics take HOURS of searching for on the net if they are out-of-print. You are welcome to send me your own fabric, if you choose.

2. FALL designs are being sewn as we speak and I already have a few ready-to-ship! As Katy and I scramble to finally finish my current workload, Dana is busy sewing up the new designs for my (mostly) READY TO WEAR TRUNK SHOWS starting on July 31st!!! I DESPERATELY want Zozo to be at LEAST 50% READY TO SHIP at all times going forward!!!

3. You will see A LOT more "ONE OF A KIND" pieces throughout the Summer and going forward, in general. I am at the tail end of finishing up my current orders and when that happens, you will see "OOAK" batches going up in my BIG CARTEL shop on a daily basis.

4. I will be adding custom photography to my business this summer, as well. Unfortunately, this obviously will only benefit my local customers around Salem and Portland, but is still very exciting! I won't be offering just photography in general, but as it relates to my clothing line. I will shoot your children in my designs and use them to post on my FACEBOOK FAN PAGE and in my design listings!

5. Going forward, I will now use USPS Priority Mail for ALL SHIPPING...even on small items like tshirts. I have had several lost packages this year with First Class Mail and I feel this is a measure I have to take to reduce my liability with lost packages and to get you your items faster!

6. I know this is sad for my retailers, but as it stands now, I will NOT be offering the wholesale option anymore. The trunk shows were way more popular than I anticipated and between those and my online shops, I am at capacity! I do have a few little things working on the horizon, so I do anticipate reopening to wholesale in the future and will keep you all up-to-date with any changes!

Thanks again so much to all of you. I NEVER want to relive the last 7 or 8 months, as it was filled with WAY too many sleepless nights and all-nighters, but I CANNOT COMPLAIN about the success and growth of my little clothing line. I SO appreciate how you all have stuck with me when I took on WAYYYYYYY more work than I should have and showed AMAZING patience and support. Zozo got very big...very fast and I have learned a lot over the past year. It is due to this success that I've had to implement these changes in order to service you all in a more efficient manner.

I think everyone is well aware of my love of photography by now. I studied photography in college (but old-school-syle....with chemicals and a darkroom!), but have recently picked it back up again. I think becoming friends with Pascale Wowak was the fuel I needed to get back into it. I flew down to CA last year for a one-on-one training session with Pascale and was able to assist her on a few shoots! I SOOOO would not be where I am without her....hands down. While I knew how to manipulate images in the darkroom, I had NO idea how to use Photoshop. Pascale introduced me to digital photo editing and really just drove my passion to new heights (thanks, Pascale!).

While I still have a lot to learn about photography, I think I have really come a long way! As a portfolio-building exercise, for a limited time, I will offer my local customers a special deal for summer. BUY AN OUTFIT and get a FREE mini-photo session! I apologize in advance that this will be a word-heavy post. I feel compelled to release a lot of thoughts I have rolling around in my head these days. There are two issues, in particular, that weigh on my mind and I'd like to do my part to educate the masses.

In this era of "Just GOOGLE it"....you can pretty much find an answer to ANYTHING. While this is FABULOUS most of the time, it also poses a very serious issue for many. As a creative person, I have surrounded myself with other creative types and I can tell you first-hand that creative people are a unique breed. We LIVE our art. We cannot exist without creating. We live in a state of constant creation...whether we are actually producing work or just chewing on ideas for our next project. It is VERY hard to NOT be in a state of creativity. It's everywhere. It's a state of BEING. Our creations are an extension of ourselves.......a piece of us.

In this age of the internet, I have seen a jaw-dropping increase in copying. Somewhere along the line, it became acceptable to copy ideas seen on tv shows, websites or magazines. "Do-it-Yourself" shows and magazines have paved the way for copying anything and everything. While I do love DIY projects, this trend has spilled over into copyright infringement. A line has been blurred. I truly don't think people UNDERSTAND why blatant copying is wrong. So...I"m gonna try to explain it with an example:

"I, Julie Anne Martin, get an idea for a new clothing design. I have years of training to get me to the point that I am now. I have PAID for an education. I labor over my new design. I lose sleep. Is my design comfortable? Will it work for kids in the potty-training stage? Can the child dress themselves in this design? Is it easy for Mom to wash? MANY hours of work go into each new design. I make samples. I tweak the samples to get everything JUST right. I research fabrics. I test the design. I create patterns for each size. I write a pattern. I send samples to photographers. The design is now complete. "

I publish my new design. A few days later......copycat designs start popping up on Etsy......for less money. Someone has taken MY idea that I have put HOURS of time, energy and training into. They have worked up similar samples and begun selling them for cheaper. WHY is this so bad you ask? Copycats are profiting off of WEEKS of hard work that they did not put in. Instead of CREATING a design...it's easier to just steal someone else's and start making money.

This same scenario is happening in photography, graphic design, ...ANYTHING creative. For those of us that put in an otherworldly amount of work into our original designs, it is HEARTBREAKING to see other, less creative types, profiting from our hard work.

It seems that most people just don't understand why it's wrong to copy. Being inspired by an idea is absolutely acceptable and NECESSARY for the evolution of design, but you ABSOLUTELY have to put your own spin on the design to make it your own. I think everyone that is familiar with ZozoBugBaby also knows how much I love COURTNEYCOURTNEY. Courtney Chu and I have become great friends and we are 2 VERY different designers. While we work in different mediums, we are both very inspired by each other. While I am inspired by her work, I am able to take her idea.....put it through my own filter...and come out with something that is totally unique and ME. We have even taken our inspirations with each other and formed a new line...From C to Z. Artists can DEFINITELY work together, but remain unique to their own visions.

This issue seems to come up over and over and I see so many of my creative friends battling this every day. It is not ok to copy. PERIOD. You are stealing that which is not yours. I cannot think of a more amazing reward than inspiring someone else and I am humbled to inspire others. If you find an idea that you would love to duplicate. ........Stop for a moment and think about how you can put your own spin on that idea. Make it your own. Bring YOURSELF to the design. THAT will make what you do truly unique. :)

On FAcebook last night, I promised a tiny peek into my former life as an artist. Oh my goodness..I hadn't seen some of these in YEARS. I pulled just a few pieces out from a few years ago. I pretty much focused on life drawing and portraits...charcoal..mixed media...there is even a bit of photography/printmaking in there.....

This first mixed media piece was a portrait I did of Zoe as a baby (and yes...her head was that big. HAHHAAH). I feel bad for Delia. *Note: MUST find time to do a portrait of Delia........*. ENJOY!!!!

Hi friends!!

I have been meaning to update everyone for weeks now, but I live in a constant state of "behind"! I wanted to announce a few changes happening at ZozoBugBaby this summer.

For those that have been with me for a while, you ALL know of an average 4-week wait time to get your Zozos. This is just NOT ideal for anyone. I want you to have your Zozos as fast as possible. Even with 2 part-time sewing assistants (a.k.a..ROCKSTARS!), my business is just growing so fast that our little trio STILL can't keep up. I have hired one of my assistants, Katy, full-time to begin in June! This will really cut down production time and I couldn't be happier!!!! Dana will still be part-time, as she has an ADORABLE baby girl at home AND her handbags for ZozoBugBaby have taken off like a rocket! I fear one day soon, she won't have any time for me anymore! HAHAH!

I REALLY REALLY want to thank every single one of you for being so kind and patient with me. I know it is SO hard to wait a whole MONTH to get your outfits and I am working SO hard to get this situation to a more manageable place. It seems that every action I take to level out the supply/demand ratio just means my business has a huge surge and I"m back to square one (NOT that I"m complaining at all! ).

Anyway........on to other matters. This year has seen the first ever ZozoBugBaby trunk show season. I have to tell you that I had NO idea what I was getting myself into. I wasn't entirely sure the trunk shows would work out, but WOW....was I wrong! They were about 10x more successful than I projected.

ZOZO BUSINESS LESSON #1: ASSUME AND PLAN FOR SUCCESS....and then double your projections. Then..you MIGHT be prepared for the workload. LOL.

There have been some bumps in the road with the trunk shows, but I learned SO much and the Fall shows will be even better! Here is the new model for the trunk shows:

1. Fall shows will begin in mid-July (July is already booked, so new shows will start booking in August).

2. Most of the trunks for Fall will include READY MADE designs to take home the day of the trunk event!!! My goal is to have at least one of each size of each design ready to go. Guests can also order designs, as well.

3. Because of the ready-made nature of the Fall trunks...ONLY 2 SHOWS PER MONTH will take place (until I can gauge the workflow situation). This will also avoid the Express mail costs I incurred this season.

4. Potential hostesses will need to fill out a short application to host a show and MUST have a minimum of 5 confirmed guests for the show. Full hostess details will be available upon request for application.

Those are the big changes coming up for Fall and I have some amazing designs in store for you! I even have a couple of Summer gems still up my sleeve!!! Look for more BOY designs, as well!

THanks again to everyone for sticking with me and for your encouragement and enthusiasm for my designs. I truly have a passion for what I do and ADORE dressing your little ones!!

So...I took a break from the studio for a couple of hours today because the weather was GORGEOUS, and did a photoshoot with Miss Bella. :) I just got my new Canon 5D Mark II this week and took it out for a spin. I KNOW that professional photographers everywhere are CRINGING right now at the thought of this amazing camera in the hands of a non-pro. Believe me..I GET IT. But....I'm working every day to become worthy. :)

Anyway....we started out at the French Unicorn in downtown Salem. It was THE perfect setting for my little vintage-inspired tier skirt and tee. To add to our perfect little combo.....Bella's Mommy (the amazing designer behind That Jewelry Girl), brought along this INSANELY GORGEOUS tutu headband!!! I am not a jewelry wearer, but I DO wear Rebecca's jewelry. I LOVE IT. Check out her shop HERE!

This next set just might be my FAVES!!!! A new little something you'll see more of in the future....."hybrid" dresses..blending knit and quilting-weight cotton. Oh yeah.....and rosette leggings!!!!

It's always so exciting to meet up with a new photographer that can offer something unique! Reata Knieriemen of Sugar Shots Photography (Houston, TX) has 3 gorgeous little girls and was only too happy to show them off for me!!!! I always get a bit nervous when designing for a big shoot with multiple children. The pressure!!!! I think we pulled it off beautifully, though...heehee!

I love how Reata's images are so pure and crisp and her girls look like little angels!!!! I decided to design some ultra-girly pieces and jumped into my pink and purple fabrics. I'm not a real "pink" person, but somehow....this Spring just drove me to the sweet pinks that I know my OWN girls love so much.

For those in the Houston area...RUN..do not walk...to check out Sugar Shots Photography. I have spent WAYYYYY too much time just browsing the blog. Beautiful images make me happy!!! Thanks, Reata! I think you'll be seeing much more of these girls in future Zozo shoots!

Now....the outfits! First up is a new design first seen with my recent Petal Bow Skirt. Skirts are my absolute favorite thing to wear AND to sew! They are so easy and graceful! This one is the Reata Skirt (well...cause...I designed it specifically for this shoot!) and will be available in sizes 2T - 12/14. Look for it in the shop this week!

Next, we have the Magenta Ocean Twirl Skirt and Rosette Initial Tee! A perennial favorite at ZozoBugBaby, this twirly panel skirt welcomes in Spring with bold color!

Photo Prop THURSDAY - New MCP Action Set!!!!

The holiday put me a day late on my PHOTO PROP weekly feature! (Ok..I did skip last week, too....:/). I'm MORE than making up for it, though, by featuring the new ACTION SET by Jodi over at MCP ACTIONS! I haven't had a chance to play around yet, so I'm going to use Pascale Wowak's examples using the action set, as well as her description:

Hannah Vickers Photography and new Trunk items!

Hannah Vickers was the very first person to host a ZozoBugBaby trunk show and it was a smashing success! Not ONLY did Hannah host a trunk show, but she photographed all of the new samples for me...several times! That's dedication! I wanted to highlight a couple of new items in the trunk. Ok..how cute are these little capri belted ruffle pants??? Adorable, right? There is also a new "Aubergine" dress, featuring gorgeous purples from Anna Maria Horner. I seriously am having a hard time finding the words to describe this latest shoot. First of all...I had a huge handful of courtneycourtney outfits to shoot, as well as one Zozo. I find that I love shooting CC outfits more than Zozo because I feel less presure. It makes no sense, but I don't feel OBLIGATED to shoot for CC, so the shoots tend to go more easily. When I shoot my own clothing...OMG....the PRESSURE. My shop is FILLED with professional photographer shoots and I can't take it!!! I just get all nervous and it doesn't FLOW like when I shoot for CC (note to self: work this kink out. DUH!).

Anyway..so..I had SEVERAL CC's to shoot and I decided to use Ziba...the daugher of a friend and fabulous customer. Not only is she just so darned PRETTY...she's just a DISH. We had the BEST time today and Ziba is a photographer's DREAM. You'll be seeing MUCH more of Ziba in the months to come!

My girl Pascale Wowak needs some LOVE tonight, so.....I'm gonna get caught up on my blog posts....just for her! :) If you have read my blog for ANY length of time, you know I have said everything that can possibly be said about Pascale. She's AMAZING, GRACIOUS and just a wonderful human being. Her daugher, Miss E? TOTAL ROCKSTAR! I have had the pleasure of spending time with both Pascale and Miss E and they are both just as DELICIOUS in person. :)

Pascale was amazing enough to shoot 3 new designs for my Spring line and Miss E was a trooper! This shoot happened in REALLY cold weather and I am always stunned at just how these two manage to TEAR UP a shoot..no matter what the conditions!

Kris McCann Extravaganza!

I am so incredibly lucky to be working with a new Australian photographer, Kris McCann! I first just need to talk about how incredibly gorgeous her little girls are! I have always wanted red hair and just look at these girls! Cherubs, these girls are!!! What's funny to me is that one of Kris' good friends, Lena, has been one of my most inspiring customers. What is the Coco Collection?

As model images come rolling in, I wanted to devote a post just to the new COCO Collection. This collection is VERY near and dear to me, as I am really pulling from my fine art roots in this line. The COCO creations will by artsy, offbeat and definitely unique. Some will be one-of-a-kind, while others will be duplicated. Some will have exposed serged seams, and some will be made of knit. COCO will include both new fabric and vintage/recycled. This collection is one of surprises!

But what is the inspiration behind COCO? Although, my passion lies in creating one-of-a-kind wearable art pieces for girls, most of the inspiration for this line comes from fellow designer, Courtney Chu of courtneycourtney. A lot of my customers are well aware of my CC obsession, as well as the occasional ZozoBugBaby-courtneycourtney collaboration! Courtney is just one of those really unique designers out there and I constantly get new ideas from her! courtneycourtney is a line of knit dresses, tunics and a few other gems constructed of recycled and new tshirts/knits. Courtney also features her hand cut silkscreen designs on her creations, as well.

While there are many people that assemble recycled knits into children's clothing, Courtney's are so unique and unlike anything else out there. She definitely has her own vision and style. I have really been inspired by what she does and decided to take that inspiration and put the "Zozo" spin on it......and there ya have it....the COCO collection!

Speaking of inspiration, I think it's so important to note that the mark of a true "designer" is to take an idea that appeals to you, put it into your own little design blender and create something NEW. While there are many aspects of this line that were inspired by Courtney (exposed serged seams, using knits, screenprinting {oh yes..there will even be some of this!}), my creations look nothing like Courtney's. That's the beauty of COCO! The Zozo spin makes this collection fresh and sassy! And if you haven't figured it out yet..."COurtneyCOurtney" is how the name was created. :) Thanks ALWAYS to Courtney Chu for creating such amazing designs and for letting me use her as inspiration! In the age of Etsy and the internet, it's becoming harder and harder to remain unique and Courtney is always ahead of the game. As long as I am able to retain my special "Zozo" style, you can count on many wonderful things to come in the future!!! If you haven't discovered her yet, check out courtneycourtney!

Kate is GREAT!

WEEEEEEE! Kate is back with BAM! That would be the FANTABULOUS Kate Callahan! It is ALWAYS a good day when images come in from Kate. I never know what adorable new model she's found or what spicy location she's discovered this week. She always seems to do everything to perfection....accessories...locations....hairstyles...colors! I could go on!

Kate was saddled with one of ZozoBugBaby's funkier photo shoots, but I knew she would ROCK it! I had a wacky vision in my brain of a little bolero jacket with huge, billowy "angel wings"...even more so than my "Angel Wing" Holiday Dress. I wanted DRAMA.....DANCE......GIGGLES....and PERSONALITY in this design. I wanted to design something just plain FUN to wear. Looks like this little model surely had fun at this shoot. This is EXACTLY what I had in mind when I designed it. I envisioned little girls floating around with their angel wings and really letting their imaginations fly!

Secondly, Kate photographed a one-of-a-kind apron top that features a vintage quilt top panel, accented with a gorgeous vintage trim. And the purple cord? To die for! Now...no ZozoBugBaby creation is TRULY complete without a few NuxieMade accessories to go with it. Melissa Donnelly of NuxieMade is now offering REALLY sweet crocheted headbands (stretchy!), as well as flower hair clips! How creative is Kate in that she actually attached one of the clips to the flower headband? Notice how in a few of the pictures the clip is on the belt loop? SO many ways to wear them!

I'm sold....this 3-way collaboration of Kate Callahan Photography, ZozoBugBaby and NuxieMade is here to stay! All about family

So, when my sister said that she was having professional photos taken of the family, my first response was, "You are wearing ZozoBugBaby, right?". :)
I whipped up a custom outfit for Miss Mary Alice and a coordinating skirt for her mommy! Stunning images were done by Artsy Phartsy Photography in Oklahoma!

A new collaboration!

OHHHHHH! I just get to silly-happy when new images come in! These images are so fun because they are a 3 way collaboration between ZozoBugBaby, Genny and Jane Hair Accessories, and Berrytree Photography! Jessica NeSmith of Genny and Jane approached me to design a dress for a photo shoot that would coordinate with her hair accessories. Um......OK! GLADLY! I have worked with her before and knew it would be fun!

THe photo shoot she had scheduled was with Sarah Burton of Berrytree Photography. I had never worked with Berrytree before and ohhhhhhhh......what a surprise these images were! Drop-dead gorgeous! The colors!!! The location!!! The model!! The dress! Just a fantastic combo all around.

I am so grateful that Sarah let me use the images and thankful that Jessica felt ZozoBugBaby would blend so well with her own designs! Check out both ladies here: Genny and Jane and Berrytree Photography. THANKS LADIES! I can't WAIT to work with you both again!

This new dress is called "Little Birdie Crimson" and will be available tomorrow! A year-round dress, the 3/4 sleeves are breezy enough for Summer and easily layered over a long-sleeved tshirt in Winter! It's the Sassy Miss E once again (she's ONLY my favorite model, ya know. ) I don't know what to say about Miss E and her MAGNIFICENT Mommy, Pascale Wowak, that hasn't already been said a bazillion times in my previous posts. Pascale's Zozo shoots just get more incredible every single time, yet somehow they are all at the peak of amazingness! How is that even possible to top yourself over and over when you already so incredible?

I dunno, but Pascale does it somehow. Now, I can't give ALL the credit to Pascale, right? I mean....Ellie is just hands-down the most spirited little model. She just injects her infectious little personality into every photo! I love this kid. :) This child can work a photo shoot like no other!

Ok, so...the clothing. Welcome to the "Love Me Collection". This line features a REVERSIBLE little bolero jacket (uh huh! 2 looks in one!), as well as an embellished tshirt, twirl skirt and pants! Amy Butler's new "Love" line of fabrics is nothing short of mouth-watering! Along with all of the other Spring previews you've seen recently this line will be available in late February!

This is one of my favorite new Spring collections! The "Geisha Blooms" collection features a sweet little top, a funky bib dress and ruffle rosette skirt set! The only thing better than a new Zozo collection? Oh, I dunno......having the rare opportunity to have all 3 outfits photographed at the same time, on 3 models....in the same shots! Photographing 3 children at once CANNOT be easy. Kimberly Van Sistine excelled at this unique Zozo shoot!! The cherry on top of this stellar pairing.......matching NuxieMade accessories!!! I am literally just buzzing with excitement!!! You'll remember images of my Angel Wing Dress not too long ago from Allison Cottrill (um....stunning!!!). Well...Allison is back with some seriously divine Zozo images!!!! Now, to backtrack a little bit...the CORE of who I am is an artist. Although ZozoBugBaby keeps me really busy these days, I do still draw and paint when I get the chance. I have such a passion for all things art. So...when Allison mentioned an "art shoot" for my two newest designs, I think I had heart palpitations!

I LONG to photograph my youngest, Delia ( 2 1/2), in my designs, but.....she hates the camera. Throws a FIT when I even mention taking her picture. That's why I was completely dumbfounded when she was so excited to model for me today. It just so happened that she was wearing a new ZozoBugBaby piece.....the planets somehow aligned for me. Seriously....you have NO idea how rare it is to get a smiling picture of her.

Not only did she let me take photos of her...she ROCKED it. She posed and giggled and asked to model AGAIN! I have no illusions that this will happen again ANYTIME soon, but...for now.....this is enough. :) My baby, Delia......................so darned cute. The top she is wearing is part of the new "Coco Collection". I'll be listing a dress and top version of this over the weekend!

What can I say about Kate Callahan? This woman was BORN to do fashion photography. Her ideas.....her images...her creativity....her adventurous spirit! I love this woman!!!! I always know Kate's images will be a feast for the eyes! This ZoGirl Spring 2010 shoot was no exception! Another dress in this very special collection, the "Polka Dot Priscilla" dress features a full twirly skirt, vibrant waist sash and the removable rosette (available on a hair clip or pin). As you can see....this dress BEGS for fun accessories! SO bubbly!

I was surprised with images today of my "Angel Wing" Holiday Dress by Allison Cottrill! Ohhhh...my favorite model and photographer team is back with a fresh Spring design for ZoGirl! This one is just pure sweetness! The "Sofia Rose" dress features a full twirly bottom and a signature rosette that can be placed on a pin or alligator clip. It can be moved around the dress or put into the hair! How cool is that?

Pascale's images are always so amazing and these are just bright and sassy! Miss E brings her sweet face and feisty personality to any Zozo creation for that added pizazz!!! Dreaming of Spring........

I know we haven't even hit Winter yet, but how l just LONG for Spring. The warmer months are my favorite to design for! While the Spring/Summer lines won't be available until late February, I will be releasing photos of what's to come now. I am adding the trunk show option to ZozoBugBaby and ZoGirl, so in order to prepare and get orders and samples ready, the goods must make a sneak preview!!!

FIrst up....a happy little number for ZoGirl, my line for girls size 6 and up (don't worry, little ones, I have much to come for you, as well!). "The Brielle Dress" was created just with this little model in mind.....sunny and GORGEOUS! I am just in love with this new line of halter dresses which are a bit 50's inspired, with just a smidge of "Old Hollywood", and a dash of Audrey Hepburn. Throw those 3 things into a blender with a box of crayons and VOILA!..you have my upcoming Spring line.

I'm not done yet! A new surprise feature on this line of dresses is the fabric rosette (definitely a Zozo signature look for Spring!). What's even better than just a fabric rosette? One that is attached to your choice of a pin or alligator clip, so it can be moved around the dress (waistband, halter strap, etc..) or even used as a hair accessory! How cool is that??

Now, nothing make a Zozo dress look finer than having it photographed by an AMAAAAAAZING photographer. These shots were created by none other than Kara May. This woman just floors me with her images. Jennifer Burns is a relatively new photographer to the ZozoBugBaby lineup, but OHHHHH, how she "gets" it! I ADORE the modern art feel of the background, coupled with the dynamic colors in the outfit! Jen...you rocked my world with these images! Her daughter is so adorable and I created this little outfit just for her! A simple pillowcase-top design, it is easily worn all year long, paired with warm or cool weather accessories! Jen ROCKED it with the colorful tights! That Jewelry Girl

I wanted to write about one of my favorite Etsy shops....That Jewelry Girl! Rebecca is a local and we are both fans of each other's work, so we trade (and buy!) from time to time. I have never been much of a jewelry person, but I've pretty much become addicted to Rebecca's gorgeous one-of-a-kind pieces. She has converted me to a jewelry wearer!

I get compliments every time I wear a That Jewelry Girl piece. They are ornate, but simple and the ultimate in feminine accessories! Each one is an art piece. I own rings, earrings and necklaces from Rebecca and I am so excited to pick out what I"ll wear each day!

The perfect shoes for your Zozo!

I was first introduced to Bugaboo Shoe Company by Pascale Wowak Photography. Almost every Zozo shoot Pascale has done has included Bugaboo shoes. Every time she sends new images I always ask, "Where in the world did you find those shoes?". Her answer every time....Bugaboo. The are the PERFECT accessory for any ZozoBugBaby or ZoGirl outfit! SO colorful and unique and like nothing I have seen on the market.

So..I just HAD to have some. I aquired 4 pair just this week and I am IN LOVE. The girls adore the shoes, as well, and they are extremely picky about footwear. The soles are very flexible and the shoes themselves are buttery soft, which makes them extr1emely comfortable. My favorite pair are the orange "Paulina" shoes with the flowers. I have never seen orange shoes for girls!! I'm kind of spoiled now and Bugaboo Shoe Company has ruined me for other brands! The owner, Robin, is a delightful woman (as Pascale said she would be!). A horse, a dress, a stunning model...and amazing photographer!

Have I ever mentioned that I'm the luckiest gal on Earth? I have the most wonderful, talented photographers contact me. One of the newest photographers in the ZozoBugBaby/ZoGirl line up is Susan Dodd. What is SO different about Susan's work is that she focuses on pets! Susan contacted me with an idea about a photo shoot involving a girl and a horse. I INSTANTLY got a vision in my head of a dress. Unfortunately, I'm keeping those pics under wraps until Spring!

I did send Susan a second dress to photograph, though, and photograph she did!!!!! Not only is her daughter drop-dead gorgeous, but her images are just MAGICAL. I mean...THE HORSES!!!!
